Hi, this is Laura Roeder, and today, I’m going to show you how to use a really cool site called backtweets.com. So, I’m here on the home page. You can see the URL. It’s B-A-C-K-T-W-E-E-T-S.COM, and what this does is it searches Twitter for any links to your website – of course any website that you want to search for – and you’ll find the mentions of you and your business that you would have missed with any other search channel, and I’ll show you why that is.
So you start by just inputting your URL – in my case, lauraroeder.com –hit “Search” and let me show you a few examples of what you’ll find. So here’s a tweet from about three weeks ago, “How to Track Your Online Reputation with SocialMention.com.” Now, you can see that I would never know in a regular search that this was linked to me, because just looking at the link, it’s a shortened link, so it says, “ow.ly.” It doesn’t lauraroeder.com. This tweet doesn’t mention my Twitter name. It doesn’t mention my business name. It doesn’t mention my name. So, in a normal Web search, this would never come up.”
Here’s another one, “How do you Track Your Online Reputation?” and then it has this “bit.ly” link. It never mentions me or my name. So the reason why this is a powerful tool is it’s going to find things that people are saying about you and your website that you would have missed from just a normal Web search. And as you can see, it can find links even if they use a shortened URL, and it finds links to all pages on your site, not just lauraroeder.com, but various blog posts that I’ve done and things like that.
So what you do is after you input your URL, so you won’t have to do the search over and over again, you want to click on this orange RSS button right here – this is the universal icon for RSS – and once you click on that, you’re brought to a page with a constantly updated feed of people who are tweeting a link with your URL in it. You can then copy and paste this address right here. If you just look in your address bar, it’ll give you the URL of the feed and you can put it into a feed reader. My favorite is netvibes.com, or a lot of people like to use Google Reader. You can create a listening station with feeds about what’s being said about you and your business, and then you can just go to that one page and get a snapshot of everything that’s going on.
So this is a really valuable tool, a really cool site that will find things being said about you on Twitter that you might otherwise miss. Again, this is Laura Roeder showing you how to use backtweets.com.

As always, short, sweet, to the point and very useful. Thank you Laura. Question: When you find out that others have then Tweeted about you or links to your site say a few weeks ago, it is a good idea to go back and thank them or acknowledge it? Is it in general a good practice? I do it and I wonder if it’s common among others. It’s such a nice feeling to know others find our information useful. Thanks again!

Thanks, Laura. Great tip! (I watched you on Blog Mastermind the other day–you definitely have it figured out!)
Quick question, I tried to click on the RSS button to get that additional information like you suggested, but instead it only showed the source code. Weird. Any tips?
