If I’m not mistaken..I think Derek was the guy who helped Pat make some changes to his site.

Yep, ever since that video review I’ve been learning more about Derek and SocialTriggers. He’s also the marketing guy at DIYthemes.com

        You’re right, I am.

I’ve been at this for a while too… even before DIYthemes. Laura knows that, but most people dont :-)

Extremely helpful video! Thanks for sharing this. The Ning thing was very funny ;)

For the “sponsored vendors” section, have you seen what Yanik Silver just put into place? He created a directory of his preferred suppliers and make them pay a yearly fee to be listed there. A cool way to add another income source http://undergroundpreferredpartners.com/details.html

That’s an interesting approach for sure. I’m not sure if that works for Laura’s purposes though that’s up to her!

Awww, man, I use my search bar too! ;-)

Love some of these tips. Duh, why didn’t I think to put opt in boxes on my About page, the most highly trafficked page in my entire site???

    Thank you!

Loved it! Eventhough it was about your page i really got some interesting ideas from listening to his comments.

Btw i have to agree on the blog side bar comments he made I don’t looks at the twitter stream :)

I have used the topics list but it just doesn’t give me what i expect. The idea of the content boxes sounds great!

Too many people put things like Twitter streams. I mean, in some cases it works, and in Laura’s case it does work. She’s running a wildly successful business.

However, to me, it’s just distracting heh.

It seems like “Shop” isn’t communicating what you want it to, but “Services” isn’t accurate. Why not rename “Shop” as “Training Programs” (not just the page title, but the navigation)? When I first saw your site, I assumed Shop was going to be cheap content (like an amazon affiliate store or something) and it was a while before I realized how you had it organized.

    Great video!

I think training programs sounds good to me, though I like the “active” nature of Shop.

In addition to Training Programs, I think it’s also worth testing Products and Buy Products as the menu label.

The updated page looks great. The one addition you could make is turning your one word page title (currently Shop) into a full headline.

I’m guessing Yoast’s SEO plugin has a similar feature to the All in One SEO plugin that allows you to enter a specific menu label. This makes it possible to write a long headline for the page without messing up your navigation.

  9. Hey Laura,

I love how you took Derek’s advice on the “shop” page. It looks great! Much more effective from a CRO point-of-view.

Hope the changes help your conversions :)

    Have a great day,

    Brad

Derek is a very smart guy. He also recently did the same thing for Social Media Examiner contributor, Denise Wakeman. His content marketing strategy is excellent — developing relationships with readers from other blogs through a service no one else is doing… Blog reviews.

    Thanks for sharing this, Laura.

Hi Derek and Laura. Thanks for sharing this video – great content. Question for Derek – if you did the tools page with an optin form, would you create a separate mailing list and separate newsletters for that? Lise

Me? Probably not. I’d let people opt-in to the mailing list, and make the tools part the bribe. However, i’d definitely tag them with the fact that they signed up for “tools” so I knew where the subscribe came from.

This completely reaffirmed my belief in the art of zen design.

Derek, I was wondering if you’ve seen any data on horizontal navigation paths, specifically the use of “slidedeck”. Looks like a great program, but I’m wondering if it’s too much of a design leap for the web un-savvy?

Laura, this is a great piece of content. Hope to see ya back in NYC soon.

I’m of two minds with horizontal design paths. I’ve seen cases where it works, and i’ve seen cases where it doesn’t work. It is something worth testing though.

Great information Derek, although I will disagree that the “search box” is not a beneficial tool – I often use it on Laura’s website and thank God she has it up there. There is certain information that she has had way before I ever discovered her, and sometimes I’ll search for something that I may think she has and at the end I find exactly what I needed. How would that work without the search box?

Hi Laura and Derek, thanks so much for this video. I found it really, really valuable and will definitely be recommending both your sites to peeps all the way down here in NZ! I have a general web-related question if you don’t mind me asking… I’m a PR & marketing consultant and at present my site is emmalawrence.co.nz. However, everything else (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube) is emmalawrencepr due to availability. Should I redirect my site to emmalawrencepr.com (which I now also own) to be consistent, or is it best to just keep it simple with my name only? Any feedback would be very much appreciated :-) Thanks again – you guys rock!
