How can twitter lists be useful for business? How do you set one up, and how do you follow an existing list? What’s the difference between public and private? All that and more is explained in this sample clip from Your Backstage Pass to Twitter.

So, using lists allows you to segment people who you want to check up on but you just don’t have the bandwidth to follow or maybe you don’t really want to follow all the time but you want to check in on them every so often. So, a really good example are lists that I follow over here. So, here’s kind of your list center, is in this right side bar, and that’s going to show lists that you follow. Here is where things get weird. You know how you can follow and individual person? You can follow someone else’s list as well and when you follow that list it doesn’t mean that the list shows up in the tweet stream, it doesn’t mean that you’re following the people who are on the list. All it means is that it shows up in this right side bar right here.

So, I want to show you the summit series example that I’m following because this is a way that you might want to use lists. So, this a list that I’m following. Again following it does not mean that I’ve added all these people but I can add some of them. For example I follow Marie Forleo, I don’t follow Chris Wise, but they’re both showing up in this list that someone else created. Again for me following just means that it’s in this right side bar. And this list happens to be of all the people that went to this conference called Summit Series. So, perfect example of when you would want to use a list.

So, I went to this conference called Summit Series, I met some really amazing people. There are people that I want to keep up with but it’s ninety new people and some of them do things that honestly I have no interest in, that I don’t want to hear from all the time, but it is nice for me to have a way to kind of pop in and say hi and check in on them. So this list is a perfect way to do that. I don’t have to follow all those people, but maybe once a month or before a summit, the next summit series comes up or whatever it is, I can just kind of take a minute to look through here, see what people are up to, maybe look for some things to respond to. Again, a way to keep up without having to actually follow.

So now let’s talk about how to follow other people’s lists and how to create a list. So, first let’s create a new list. Again all the list stuff happens in your side bar right here when you’re signed on to Twitter. I’m going to click New List and make a list name. So I’ll just call this Test List. The description you want to use so other people can understand what your list is about, if anybody else wants to follow it. So, for this one I’m just going to write, Testing 123 and I’m going to make this public. The difference between public and private, public is public in every way. That means when somebody clicks on my profile they can see that I’ve created this list, who’s on the list is totally public, other people can choose to follow it, it will show up in Google, all that good stuff.

Private is totally private. That means nobody know who’s on the list, nobody knows that the list exists at all. People can’t tell if they’re on the list, no one can subscribe to it, you can only see it when you’re signed on to your own account. So you might want to use a private list for things like maybe you want to keep track of prospective clients or maybe you want to keep track of the competition. That’s a great thing you want to use a private list for because you’re not going to start something called competition, right. You can put it on a private list or maybe it’s just like people that you kind of want to follow but not enough to actually follow so it’s kind of second tier thing and you don’t want to have a public list called second tier.

So, when you have it private no one can see the name, no one can see the description but I would still recommend that you be a little bit secretive in what you call the list because even though it’s private, this is the Internet, you never know what people are going to come across. Oh, okay this even makes my point even further. Sarah just told me that if people are on your private list they can see the title of that list. Okay, so that’s really interesting. So I need to correct myself because one little thing I just told you was not right.

With a private list, people – if LKR is on your private list, I can see that I’m on your list and what it’s called but I can’t subscribe to it, I can’t see anyone else who’s on it which makes it extra important that you do what I was about to say and make kind of a sneaky name for your list. So, let’s say that you want to start a list of competitors. You’re a realtor, like we had a question earlier, she said, “I’m a realtor in L.A.,” and she was asking about competitors. And so you want to start a list of all the other realtors but you want to call it my competitors and you could start a public list called like L.A. Home Industry or something like that. That would be another way to tackle it but let’s say you just want a private list. So, instead of calling it My Competitors, you’re going to call it like MC L.A. and that stands for My Competitors L.A. or just MCA or just MC Twitter or something like that. So, this name is unique to your account.

I think there can be other lists of the same name, I think. Yeah, there can be other lists of the same because they’re under other people’s accounts. So, be a little bit sneaky with your name. Don’t call it like jerk faces or people that were rude to me once. Okay, I’m just kind of having fun here now but instead of People That Were Rude To Me Once, you’re like Rude Once To Me, okay you can call your list R1TM. Let’s be cool with our private list names. So, anyway now we’re going to do a public list called Testing 123 and let’s keep this Rude Once To Me name because it’s such a great name, R1TM, and I will create that list.

Now, I have to find people to add to my list but usually when you’re creating a list you’re not so much finding people to add but you’re coming across people that you want to add on a list. And so let’s go through my followers cause maybe this something that you’ll want to do with your followers. Maybe you want to kind of semi follow them for a while to find out if you really want to follow them. You could add them to again some sort of tier two list that you don’t want to call tier two, maybe just T2 or something. So, here’s somebody that I added to this list that we have of everybody that’s in this course, Your Back Stage To Twitter. And so let’s say that Lara Casey was awesome in the course. I’m going to click on her profile and then I’m going to click lists. So for now I can add her to this R1TM. Lara Casey has not actually been rude to me for the record but now she’s on that list. I can add her to the other list as well. I’ll take that one off so not to confuse people.

And say look, she’s – it’s like she’s listened to my advice even though she’s not in this webinar, well as far as I know. I guess she could be on this webinar. Oh, she’s editor in chief of Southern Weddings Magazine. That’s kind of cool. So she has this list called MTH Chicago. She’s using like a little bit of secret code maybe or maybe not because it says MTH 2010 here, but that could be – that could be a secret code. So, to add people to your list, like when you come across people that you want to be on a list, you’re just going to click on their name and then click this little list button right here. You can also see that when I clicked followers, I got that same button right here.

So, that’s how I add people to my lists. You can see I have this private list called peeps. That’s a good neutral name there and then if I want to delete a list, you go to right here at the top corner, Delete. Okay, now let’s talk about how you can follow other people’s lists cause that can be a good way to keep track of what’s going on in your industry. So, I’m following this list from IttyBiz called Publicly Delicious. Let’s just look at how we can see all of her lists. So, if I click on this little button next to IttyBiz’s name I can go to her profile, no, or I can go to this list, but then I can click here and go to her profile and I can see these lists that she’s created on the right side. So I’m going to hit View All and she has publicly delicious, hot dudes with goatees and tweetupable.

So you see some of – people are using this just for fun. There is a million different ways that you can use this. She has Hot Dudes With Goatees, it only has one person on it, right. Maybe I want to see her Tweet-able list cause I would guess these are people in the same city that she’s in and so maybe I’m in that city too and I’m like ooh I want to keep track of these people. So, I could just click right here and now I’m following this list and again what following means is just that is shows up in my little side bar right here.

This video shows how to add your LinkedIn, Facebook Profile, Facebook Page, and Twitter accounts to HootSuite so that you can easily send (or even schedule) updates to all of your social networking profiles at once.

Hi, this is Laura Roeder of gethedash.com. Today I’m going to show you how you can add additional social networks to Hoot Suite in order to send out one message to all of your social media profiles at one time.

So, you can see I’m logged in here at hootsuite.com. That’s H-O-O-T-S-U-I-T-E dot com. Of course if you don’t have a free HootSuite account yet that would be the first step, but once you’re logged in you just want to click on Settings here at the bottom. Make sure you’re on that social networks tab, which you should be, and then hit Add Social Network. You can see they have Twitter, Facebook, Facebook pages, LinkedIn, Ping FM and at the time of this recording WordPress, MySpace and Foursquare are in beta.

So, you just choose the account you want to add, each one is a little different. You might be clicking this Connect button ore just entering your log and name and password, hit Submit, and then close the box. After you add your social accounts, you will able to select any accounts that you want when you send out a message right up here or even for scheduling messages ahead of time that can go out to all of your social networking profiles. It’s pretty cool. So again once you’re logged in you just need to click on settings here at the bottom and then click Add Social Network.

Again this is Laura Roeder from getthedash.com.

The following is a guest post by Holly Jackson, the owner of Cottage Copy

I’m Holly, a shy copywriter and marketing consultant, and today I’m here to tell you about why you should use social media. Now I’m not going to talk about all the great advertising benefits that it has, because quite frankly, Laura can do that a hell of a lot better than I can. But I am here to talk to you about how social media can be a godsend for people who are shy and scared of marketing. Like me. And probably, also like you.

The problem is that most people, when you really get down to it, are scared of selling things. Selling things requires you to not only believe that you have something great going on, but that others will agree with you. It’s the second part that scares my clients, and me most days. Many successful business people go through their lives terrified that each new stage of their business will be the one where people find out that they really aren’t all that. If you’re a naturally shy person in the first place, this means that marketing can truly seem like an insurmountable task. After all, the combination of talking about yourself and marketing your products can seem daunting, even to the most outgoing among us.

When I work with clients like this, I tell them to head over to Twitter. This doesn’t always go over well, I’m sorry to say. After all, if marketing scares you, why would you want to spend hours a day talking about people about it? Well, the thing is, that’s not really what Twitter does. Social media doesn’t involve the scary part of being social: the awkward forced conversations, the introducing yourself in front of strangers. It doesn’t involved getting judged based on your clothing, or your young face or squeaky voice. As someone who has a young face and a very squeaky voice, I’m grateful for this every day. When it comes down to it, social media is really about building relationships with people who you’d be friends with anyway. Which is why Twitter is so great: you can build relationships in real time, without all of the real life social pressure that you’d feel at a networking event or a party.

If you’re shy, Twitter is really the perfect marketing tool. There’s something magical that happens when you start using Twitter. You meet some people: usually some great people who you’d like to hang out with anyway if you lived in the same area. And then, they find out what you do. Usually, they also find out that you’re pretty good at it, no matter what you think of yourself. And then, they tell other people. Who then tell more people, who you can also become friends with in an enjoyable and stress free way. And before you know it, you’ve got a network of people who really want to market for you. And you never even had to talk yourself or your business up to anyone.

Twitter in particular gets a bad rap sometimes, mostly because there are so many people who want to abuse it and shout over everyone else. But don’t let that turn you off, please. If you start out by looking to develop friends rather than marketing targets, you won’t find those people anyway. And if you do, it’s easy enough to turn them off by refusing to follow them. All it really takes to build a business on Twitter is a kind heart and a willingness to be open to meeting new people. Two months ago, I didn’t have a business. I now have a business that not only breaks even, but flourishes. I’m incredibly honored to say that I owe most of that to random strangers who I now can’t imagine not having in my life. They retweeted my blogs, they told people that I was awesome, and they told me that even when I thought I was a failure, I’d pick myself back up again. And they were right. As a result, I now tell clients that when they get started, the first thing they should do is grab a Twitter account. If they’re really scared, I offer to introduce them around and orient them myself. It’s that important.

If you don’t know how to market, or the idea of marketing seems like an insurmountable task, go check out Twitter. Make a bio, upload and icon, and say hi to someone. I promise, you’ll be amazed at what can happen.

Hi, I’m Laura Roeder. You can find my site at lauraroeder.com, just like it says right here. Today I want to tell you how to create a retweet on Twitter because there are two different ways that you might not know about. A retweet is when you copy someone’s tweet and send it out to your followers giving credit to the original tweeter. So, basically it’s just a way to share a tweet that you’ve read with everyone who follows you.

So, the first way to retweet is to use the built in retweet feature on twitter.com. So, I’m signed in on my account, lkr @ twitter.com, right now and all you do to retweet is click this little retweet button right here. So you can see when you’re just looking through the tweets it won’t show up, but when you hover on the right side this little retweet link will come in. So all you have to do is click this button, it’s going to ask you if you want to retweet to your followers and then you simply click yes. So, once that happens your followers are going to see a message that looks like this. See how there is this little icon right here with these arrows and you see the same icon repeated right here? It says retweets from people you follow appear in your timeline.

So, I actually don’t follow this person, Paidz. This is a retweet from someone else that I follow so it has a little retweet button in front of it so that I can see why this person who doesn’t normally show up in my stream is showing up. So, if you’re seeing people who you don’t follow show up on twitter.com, that’s why. It’s because somebody else has retweeted one of their messages and so you’re seeing it on your homepage. So, again the first way to retweet is just to click this little retweet link by whatever tweet you want to retweet and then click yes.

The second way, kind of the old school way, the way people used to do it on Twitter, is just to copy and paste what someone wrote. So, let’s find a simple one here. So if I want to retweet this tweet from Phil Macnevin, all I do is literally copy what he wrote, paste it into my twitter box here and then I’m going to write rt@philmacnevin and then his tweet comes up. So what this means is ‘rt’ stands for retweet, I need to make sure to put the @ sign in front of his name so that it will show up as a clickable tweeter name just like this one right here and this one right here, and then I paste in his message. So the way – the traditional or old school, it’s kind of funny to say that about Twitter right, the original way to do a retweet is to just simply copy and paste the entire tweet just like this. You want to paste it into your little tweet box and then you want to put an ‘rt’ on the front to show that it’s a retweet and you want to make sure to put the @ sign so that their name comes up as a clickable Twitter link just like these.

You need to make sure that the spacing is correct too. There needs to be a space between ‘rt’ and the name and there cannot be a space between the @ sign and the name. So, to retweet this I just paste it in here and click update. So again that’s one way and the other way is to click this little retweet button. This was Laura Roeder showing you how to retweet.

Hi, this is Laura Roeder of getthedash.com and today I’m showing you how to get an RSS feed of a search term on Twitter.

So Twitter is a great way to keep up with what people on the web are saying about you and your company, but you don’t need to search Twitter over and over again so here’s what you do. I’m on the Twitter homepage on twitter.com, signed into my account. So, if I want to see all the tweets for my own name I’m going to pen in Laura Roeder and hit search. Once twitter comes up with that search all you do is hit RSS feed for this query on the search page and once you click that link you’ll be taken to a page that has the feed url. You can just copy and paste this url from your toolbar right here. It might look – they do something special with feeds and safari so it might look a little different in your browser, but however it looks you just want to go here and copy and paste and then you can paste that feed url into Google Reader or whatever feed reader you read and then you automatically have an updated stream of what people are saying about you, your company, your competition or any search term that you like.

This has been Laura Roeder.
